Get Your
Team Together!
Kick-Off is June 3

I.  INTRODUCTION
Green Up! Get Moving! was inspired by a survey, conducted by National Geographics, that found
American consumers ranked DEAD LAST as consumers of renewable energy, recycling,
transportation, food consumption, and everyday consumer goods, and NUMBER ONE in obesity and
related diseases of the seventeen industrialized countries surveyed.

Green Up! Get Moving! addresses both crisis. It combines the green
movement with fitness sports to help bring awareness to the importance of
maintaining a healthy planet and body. It’s designed to get people of all
ages involved in physical activities and to serve as a platform to help
promote zero-waste, recycle, to use renewable energy, alternative
transportation, live locally and maintain a sustainable lifestyle. It's also
    about having fun!

II. CONCEPT
  • Year around promotion,
  • Divided into four, three month phases or sessions.
  • Activities includes:biking, paddling, running/walking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
  • Team format. Team can consist of 1 - 5 members
  • Points "honor" system determines team placement at the end of each three month phase.
  • Weight loss
  • NO ENTRY FEES: Program supported by Alternatives Magazine advertisers and sponsors.

  • TEAMS: It's the glue that keeps individual team members motivated. Each team comprises of
up to 5 members (one person can be a team). They can be co-ed, all male or female. Each
team selects a team captain, who is responsible for collecting team members points each
    month and other duties.

  • COMPETE AGAINST YOURSELF at your pace, your schedule, by yourself, or with teammates,
wherever you are - even on vacation. In other words the time and miles you normally spend
training, or just walking or jogging recreationally, or back and forth to work or school, can now
be converted to points, awards and recognition.

  • PHASES:  Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Each phase is three months long. After each
phase, teams may stay intact, form new ones, change teammates, change name, sponsors
etc. with each new phase. Points winners and special accomplishments are recognized and
    published following each Phase.

  • HONOR SYSTEM:  All team members are responsible for logging their own miles and
converting them to  points and turning them into their team captains each month during the
check-in party of each phase. Points standings and photos are posted in Alternatives
Magazine website, weekly Enewsletters, plus our Facebook, Twitter, MeetUp and sent to all
    (166) Montana media sources for publication. In keeping with the spirit of the promotion, "on
your honor," means doing the right thing when logging miles and points.

  • POINTS SYSTEM: Very simple. Points are earned based on miles run/walk, biking,
kayaking/canoeing/paddle boarding in the summer, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing
in the winter. The more strenuous, or technical, the activity is, the more points are awarded.

    Run/Walk: 5 points per mile
    Cycling: 10 points per mile
    Paddling: 7 points per mile
Cross-country skiing: 15 points per mile
    Snowshoeing: 5 points per mile
Team weight loss (optional): 1 point per pound

  • DOUBLE POINTS can be earned for participating in various special events, such as attending
the monthly check-in parties and participating in the pre-party fun run/walk/bike.

III. TEAM SPONSORSHIP! "SHOW YOUR COLORS"
This is the heart of promotion. The benefits of businesses sponsoring an "in-house" team, or teams,
    are limitless.

  • Teams can comprise of corporate businesses, local businesses, schools, clubs, civic
organizations and family members. Sponsors can sponsor as many teams as they want. More
teams, more exposure. They can be "in-house" or chosen outside the workplace.

  • From a promotional and marketing point of view, team names are important and it's
recommended to use the sponsors corporate or business name followed by a sub-title or
slogan. However, zany off-the-wall, names also work, creating attention and exposure.

  • Teams can be formed within different departments EX.  sales staffs, warehouse, teachers,
administration, government departments, medical techs, nursing staff etc.

  • Sponsors may provide team t-shirts or jackets, displaying the sponsors logo and colors. The
    more fanfare the more exposure.

    SPONSOR BENEFITS

  • The benefits of sponsoring a team is a great way to promote employee camaraderie, fitness
attitudes at the work place and an opportunity to showcase your business and your
commitment to a "Clean and Green" environment.

  • For family or school teams, this is a "fun way" to get involved with a fitness program and learn
    about being green together.

  • There are also many positive economic, marketing and advertising benefits. Team points
leaders are posted each month in Alternatives Magazine website, weekly E-newsletters, plus
our Facebook, Twitter, MeetUp accounts and sent to all local and regional media. You can also
create your own promotional ideas as the program continues to grow!

IV. NO ENTRY FEES
  • There are no entry fees to participate. The program is supported and promoted by Alternatives
Magazine and it's advertisers and sponsors. However teams must register in advance. TO
REGISTER YOUR TEAM PLEASE CLICK HERE.

V. DONATIONS
  • Locations will be set up during each event where participating teams (or individuals) can make
donations to charity and non-profit organizations promoting "GREEN" and environmental programs.
The list of organizations will be published here and in the bi-weekly newsletters and event reminders.

VI. T-SHIRTS
  • Green Up! Get Moving! t-shirts and other souvenir items will be sold during each event, at selected
retail locations throughout the flathead valley and online throughout the season.

VII. GREEN UP means "ZERO-WASTE"
  • More than 60 million plastic bottles end up in landfills and incinerators every day – a total of about 22
billion last year. 9 times as many plastic water bottles were thrown away in the US in 2009 as in 2004.
Plastic water bottles are clogging streams and tributaries and eventually every ocean making it a
world wide problem. Just to meet the US demand for bottled water requires more than 15 million
barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel 100,000 cars for a year. People participating in outdoor
recreational sports and organizations promoting  them are some of the biggest contributors to the
problem and also the most passionate to help solve it. The GreenUp! Get Moving! Challenge
    combines both.

  • Each event will maintain a "Green" and "Zero-Waste" theme and encourages everyone to use
stainless steel or glass water bottles instead of disposable plastic bottles. A recycling area will be
made available during each event. All participants and spectators are encouraged to bring their
reusable and recyclable plastic and aluminum products. Special "Keep it Green" awards will be given
to the largest or heaviest loads delivered by hand or on a bike (please no truck loads delivered to
event site, they should be delivered directly to recycling center with our thanks).

  • To help reduce the footprint participants and spectators are encouraged to walk, bike, car pool or
use city transit systems to events (and everywhere else) whenever possible.
