PART I: Introduction
|
| |
|
 |
|
|
|
GeoSports, Green Up, Get Moving was inspired by a survey, conducted by National Geographic, that found American consumers ranked DEAD LAST as consumers of renewable energy, recycling, transportation, food consumption, and everyday consumer goods and NUMBER ONE in obesity and related diseases. A distinction you might expect from a third world country, but NOT here!
To get the message out we’ve combined the green movement with fitness sports to help bring awareness to the importance of maintaining a sustainable planet and healthy body!
All events and supporting activities are designed to get people of all ages involved in physical activities. They will also serve as a platform to help promote zero-waste and the universal green marketing theme of Reduce-Reuse-Recycle. It's also about having fun!

PART II: Living Green, Living Healthy
|
| |
We hear about "going green" everywhere, everyday and although most of us want to start "living green" we really don't know all the aspects or sustainable opportunities green living can provide, or where to start. Most people think the problem is just too big for one person to make a difference, but there are literally hundreds of little things that can be done on a daily basis that could add up to make a significant impact.
Disposable Plastic Water Bottle is a Symbol of our Wasteful Consumer Culture
Plastic trash has become an environmental issue, an economic issue, a human health issue, a moral issue and the disposable plastic water bottle has become the symbol of our wasteful consumer culture. Although it can be easy and convenient to pick up bottle beverage products the end cost to the environment is staggering. Here is a list of plastic bottle fun facts that put the magnitude of this pollution into scope.
• Plastic bottles take 700 years to begin composting • 90% of the cost of bottled water is due to the bottle itself • 80% of plastic bottles are not recycled • 38 million plastic bottles go to the dump per year from bottled water (not including soda) • 24 million gallons of oil are needed to produce a billion plastic bottles • The average American consumes 167 bottles of water a year • Bottling and shipping water is the least energy efficient method ever used to supply water • Bottled water is the second most popular beverage in the United State
Obesity has Become an Epidemic: More serious than smoking, drinking or poverty
The obesity problem is now the most serious health issue facing the nation, especially for kids. Health care costs for treating obesity-related illness are as high as $149 billion per year! Today, more people drive long distances to work instead of walking, live in neighborhoods without sidewalks, tend to eat out or get "take out" instead of cooking, or have vending machines with high- calorie, high-fat snacks at their workplace. Our environment often does not support healthy habits. Experts agree that one of the most important things you can do to prevent obesity is to increase physical activity.

PART III: Team Concept
|
| |
Green Up! Get Moving and Geo Sports Expo is a year around, ongoing, community wide promotion. It incorporates a team honor points system featuring the most basic and most popular forms of non-polluting, fitness sports: biking, paddling, running/walking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. In a nutshell, All events maintain a Green Living theme throughout and promote family fitness and environmental awareness. The bottom line is to get people of all ages and abilities . . . MOVING! and THINKING and DOING GREEN! This is how it works.
- TEAMS: It's the glue that keeps individual team members motivated. Each team comprises of up to 5 members (one person can be a team).
They can be co-ed, all male or female. Each team selects a team captain, who is responsible for collecting team members points each month, entry fees, t-shirt sizing etc. See team registration here.
- COMPETE AGAINST YOURSELF at your pace, your schedule, by yourself, or with teammates, wherever you are - even on vacation. In
other words the time and miles you normally spend training, or just walking or jogging recreationally, or back and forth to work or school, can now be converted to points, awards and recognition.
- PHASES: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Each phase is three months long. After each phase, teams may stay intact, form new ones,
change teammates, change name, sponsors etc. with each new phase. Points winners and special accomplishments are recognized and published following each Phase.
- HONOR SYSTEM: All team members are responsible for logging their own miles and converting them to points and turning them into their
team captains each month during the check-in party of each phase. Points standings and photos are posted in Alternatives Magazine website, weekly Enewsletters, plus Facebook, Twitter, MeetUp and sent to all local media sources for publication. In keeping with the spirit of the promotion, "on your honor," means doing the right thing when logging miles and points.
- POINTS SYSTEM: Very simple. Points are earned based on miles run/walk, biking, kayaking/canoeing/ paddle boarding in the summer, and
cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. The more strenuous, or technical, the activity is, the more points are awarded.
Run/Walk: 5 points per mile Cycling: 10 points per mile Paddling: 7 points per mile Cross-country skiing: 15 points per mile Snowshoeing: 5 points per mile Team weight loss (optional): 1 point per pound
- DOUBLE POINTS can be earned for participating in various special events, such as attending the monthly check-in parties and
participating in the pre-party fun run/walk/bike.
TEAM SPONSORSHIP! "SHOW YOUR COLORS" This is the heart of promotion. The benefits of local businesses sponsoring a team, or teams, are limitless.
- Teams can comprise of corporate businesses, local businesses, schools, clubs, civic organizations and family members. Sponsors can
sponsor as many teams as they want. More teams, more exposure. They can be "in-house" or chosen outside the workplace.
- From a promotional and marketing point of view, team names are important and it's recommended to use the sponsors corporate or
business name followed by a sub-title or slogan. However, zany off-the-wall, names also work, creating attention and exposure.
- Teams can be formed within different departments EX. Sales staffs, warehouse, teachers, administration, government departments,
medical techs, nursing staff etc.
- Sponsors may provide team t-shirts or jackets, displaying the sponsors logo and colors. The more fanfare the more exposure.
- The benefits of sponsoring a team is a great way to promote employee camaraderie, fitness attitudes at the work place and an opportunity
to showcase your business and your commitment to a "Clean and Green" environment.
- For family or school teams, this is a "fun way" to get involved with a fitness program and learn about being green together.
- There are also many positive economic, marketing and advertising benefits. Team points leaders are posted each month in Alternatives
Magazine website, weekly E-newsletters, plus our Facebook, Twitter, MeetUp accounts and sent to all local and regional media. You can also create your own promotional ideas as the program continues to grow!

GREEN UP means "ZERO-WASTE"
Events will maintain the Green theme and all participants and spectators will be encouraged to walk, bike, car pool or take public transportation to and from event locations and everywhere else. They will also be encouraged NOT TO USE or bring disposable plastic drinking bottles and similar products. Stainless steel, glass or safe plastic containers and clean water will be available onsite during events.
In keeping with the spirit of Zero-Waste, every effort will be made to avoid the use of any disposable products, even recyclable products, which include paper entry forms, results and any other paper, ink and postage communications. Email, telephone and social event gatherings will be used as primary means of communication. Information about how and where to Reduce-Reuse-Recycle will be available from several non-printed sources, plus tips on nutrition and the social and health effects of an obese society.
