April 13: "Waiting for Superman", MSU Strand Union Building/ Bozeman,MT Winner of the Audience Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, Waiting for Superman analyzes the failures of the United States public education program by following several students through the educational system. Producing as many drop-outs as graduates, filmmaker Davis Guggenheim reminds us that America’s school system is in crisis and is failing millions of students. Currently, as a nation among 30 developed countries, the United States ranks 25th in math and 21st in science. Waiting for Superman emphasizes the importance of improvement not only for our students, but also for America’s economic future. “Waiting for Superman” is a gripping story told through multiple interlocking families and follows several minority children through the education system as they try to better their futures by applying to elite schools. These schools choose attendees not by testing, but by lottery. Therefore, the future of these student along with hundreds of others rest on the chance the ball will drop in their holes. The film is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the MSU Leadership Institute and ASMSU.
