Magnus Aasheim
Magnus (Mags) Sverre Aasheim was born September 21, 1909, the third of five sons of Svein
and Marthea (Akre) Aasheim, homesteaders from Norway. His birthplace was a sod house
located on the family homestead 6 miles west of Reserve, MT. He spoke only Norwegian until
he attended Rose Hill country grade school; his high school began in Medicine Lake and
finished in Antelope where he earned his diploma in 1926.
He worked his way through colleges, earning first a teaching degree from Montana Normal
School at Dillon, then Bachelors and Masters degrees in education from Montana State
University (then) in Missoula.
His teaching career included Antelope and Belfry and, later, superintendent’s positions at
Outlook (1937-1944) and Froid (1944-1945).
In 1936, he married Velma Clark, whom he met when she was a high school student and he
was teaching junior high school in Antelope. Mags and Velma had two children, Gary and Glen,
born while the family was living in Outlook.

In 1945, Velma’s father retired from farming in Antelope and invited Mags and Velma to take over operation of the farm. Mags and Velma
accepted the offer and operated the farm until they retired from farming and later sold the farm in 2006.
Mags was involved in many community activities and projects. He became a life member of Sons of Norway, organized and was 10 year
president of the Sheridan County Stockman’s Association, coached little league baseball, was an active member of the Sheridan County
Historical Association, and edited/published two volumes of Sheridan County history (Sheridan’s Daybreak I/II).
No listing of his avocations and community activities and would be complete without a summary of his political life. A life long
DEMOCRAT, he served as Sheridan County Democratic Central Committee Chairman, four terms in the Montana Legislature, and was a
delegate to the 1972 Montana Constitutional Convention.
Mags and Velma enjoyed traveling. They spent a number of winters in Arizona, traveled to Norway, Denmark, Australia, Mexico, Great
Britain, and most parts of the United States.
In his younger days, Mags enjoyed playing several sports – baseball was his favorite. He also enjoyed bird hunting in the fields of
Sheridan County and fishing with his family and friends in Saskatchewan’s northern lakes.
Mags and Velma lived at Pioneer Manor in Plentywood for several years before moving into LaCasa Personal Care, also in Plentywood,
for the last several months. During these last years, the couple also spent some weeks in the Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home and
Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Mags’ and Velma’s family sends thanks to the staffs of each of those facilities for providing great levels of
care and compassion.
Mags passed away Monday, May 12, at Sheridan County Memorial Hospital.
Mags is survived by his wife of 72 years, Velma; brother Sam of Plentywood; sons, Gary (Peggy) of Billings and Glen (Linda [Kemmie]) of
Lakeside, MT; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
