Julia Norbo
Julia Johanna Norbo was born January 6, 1913 near Reserve, Montana the youngest of four
children born to George and Kaspara (Johnson) Aasved. She was the only one of the children
born in the United States. Julia was raised and attended school near Reserve, Montana and
attended Oak Grove High School in Fargo, North Dakota for a year, returning to graduate from
Medicine Lake High School in 1931. Her classmates and long time friends always said, “she got
them through high school.”
Julia married Walter Norbo on March 10, 1934 at the parsonage in Medicine Lake. They went to
Williston for their honeymoon in their Model A. Walt and Julia returned to farm at Medicine Lake
with Walt’s dad John Norbo.
They lived in Medicine Lake for a time before moving to the farm 3 miles south of town. In 1978
they retired from farming and continued to live on the farm until 2002 when they moved to the
Pioneer Manor in Plentywood. Most recently Julia has lived at LaCasa. Julia was a “homemaker”
in the truest sense of the word. She baked pies, cookies, bread, cinnamon rolls, buns, doughnuts
and everything else from scratch. Her grandchildren grew up on her famous sunbakkles that she
always made for Christmas. She had a huge garden and canned everything from chokecherry
syrup to corn to peaches and cherries.

Julia enjoyed embroidering and was a wonderful seamstress. When a new grandchild was born, Julia traveled to help and, of course,
hold the new baby. She loved visits from her grandchildren and she also loved animals. There was never a time that there wasn’t a cat or
dog on the farm.
Julia was a member of the United Church of Christ, ladies aid, senior citizens, Order of the Eastern Star, Nile, served on the election
board and had many pins and trophies from her years on the bowling league. If the church or the school needed food or workers, she
was always there to help. She loved to play cards and was always ready for a game of whist, bridge, pinochle or merry widow. After her
children left home, Walt and Julia took many trips. They traveled to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii and all over the mainland United States.
