Orville Halland
Funeral services for Orville Halland will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, September 14. Pastor David Curtright will
officiate at the service at Plentywood Lutheran Church; a reception at the Church Parish Hall will follow the service
and interment in Redstone Cemetery will be at 2:00 PM. Orville, 78, died Saturday morning, September 8, 2007, at
Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Plentywood.
Orville, the oldest in the family of 6 boys and 1 girl, was born at Gary, Minnesota, November 28,1928. He completed
8th grade there, then came to Plentywood in the fall of 1944 for harvest and worked for R.C. Rasmussen at
Comertown and Olaf Aasheim in Plentywood. He then returned to Minnesota for Vocational Agriculture schooling at
Crookston, Minnesota. In the spring of 1945 he came back to Sheridan County to work for Arthur & Elizabeth Blase.
He worked for them 4 summers and 1 winter; worked for a winter for a sawmill in Albany, Oregon, then for the
Sheridan County road department from the fall of 1948 until 1951 when he started at the Farmer’s Co-op Oil
Company in Plentywood. Orville Married Gladys L. Andersen on March 12, 1949, at Plentywood Lutheran Church.
They lived in Plentywood until they moved to their farm south of Redstone in March, 1955, where Orville has lived
since. They celebrated their 50th anniversary a few days before Gladys entered the hospital.
Orville and Gladys loved playing cards, and dancing, and were instrumental in forming the Big Sky Squares square
dancing club. They were very active in the Wolf Creek Club for many years; and became “Dad” to two Brazilian
exchange students, Denverson Malta and Homero DePalo. Orville and Gladys loved to travel, visited “their kids” in
Brazil, and were among the first Americans allowed to enter China, when they went with a Farm Journal tour, in
January, 1979. Other travels included Australia, New Zealand, and winter-time car trips all over the United States,
and Orville made an African Safari. It seemed like Orville was either going fishing or hunting, or had just gotten
back, and was always planning his next adventure. He was known for his willingness to help in any way at any time
... he even spent Christmas eve helping a neighbor get his water system working for the holiday: that year, Santa
Claus came on Orville’s backhoe! His sons mentioned (tongue in cheek!) Orville’s patience and readiness to
compromise – yeah, right! – but his honesty, integrity, and willingness to do whatever it took to get the job done kept
Orville and his machinery in constant demand, fixing water systems, installing septic tanks, building and
maintaining private roads, and serving as a grave digger whenever needed throughout northeastern Montana.
Orville and his sons dug Gladys’ grave at her death in April, 1999; and his sons will do the same for him.
Orville is survived by four sons and their families: Sam of Plentywood, and his children, Toni Yoss and her
husband Ray, of Nashua, Montana (and their children, Jeffrey, Colton, and Dillon); and Jeff Halland and his wife
Brandy, of Williston (and their daughter Samantha Lin); Duane and his wife Laura, on the family farm at Redstone,
and their children Tim Halland and his wife Michelle, of Williston(and their children Zach and Andy); David Halland,
and his wife Kristy of Billings (and their children Jordan and Austyn Marie); Dale and his wife Tracey, of Shepherd,
Montana; and Jim, of Missoula and his children Jennifer and Andrea. A special friend and companion, Lorraine Goff
lives in Williston.
Orville is also survived by two brothers and a sister: Norris Halland and his wife Jeannette, and Gloria Roux, both of
Fosston, Minnesota; and Kenny Halland his wife Pat, of Arden, Washington and by numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, by an infant son, David, at birth, by his daughter-in-law, (Sam’s wife)
Linda; and siblings Duane, Gifford, and Allen, by a sister who died at birth, and by his brother-in-law, Kenny Roux.

Bernice O. Petersen
DAGMAR- Funeral services for Bernice O. Petersen will be held at 11:00 (MST) Monday, September 17, 2007, at
Nathanael Lutheran Church in rural Dagmar. Pastor Johnette Grefe will officiate the service with internment to be
in Nathanael Cemetery. Bernice, 81, died at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home early Wednesday morning where
she had been a resident since August.
Bernice Otillia was born on February 9, 1926 at Good Luck Township near Grenora, North Dakota; one of Ole and
Anna (Krogen) Haugen's nine children.
She met Alvin Petersen at a dance at Brush Lake and married him on October 19, 1947 at Nathanael Lutheran
Church. They made their home nearby on the farm until moving to Plentywood. Bernice and Alvin managed the
Dagmar General Store for 17 years, and Bernice loved serving the community with the store's goods, but also
appreciated the camaraderie and visiting opportunities the store provided. Bernice was renowned for being able to
accurately add in her head a lengthy column of prices faster than anyone else could with an adding machine!
Bernice was an avid dance partner of her husband's and they traveled many miles to attend dances and enjoyed
the "jam sessions" at the Blue Moon. She loved listening to her children's band, especially when they played the
"old favorites." She made sure everyone gathered for Christmas Eve followed tradition by dancing around the
Christmas tree. She enjoyed making lefse (she always said her lefse was better than Agnes'!) and her family is
certain the number of cookies she baked totals in the hundreds of thousands. Her specialties were her pancakes,
fudge, her little rolls, coffee cake cookies, oatmeal raisin, frosted sugar, and chocolate chip cookies. Always an
organized woman, she had an efficient system of keeping track of cookie storage by numbering her ice cream pail
containers and lids. She loved having her extended and immediate family near and was in her highest glory if she
could provide a huge meal for everyone. She loved camping and passed to her kids many fond memories of
camping; graduating from the tent camper to the hard-side trailer and finally to the motor home.
A couple with old-fashioned values and honesty it was difficult to tell where she began and Alvin ended, and they
lived their married life of 55 years as one. Bernice treated her family with equality and made every effort to be fair.
Bernice was a lifelong member of Nathanael Lutheran church and was an active WELCA member as long as her
health permitted. She was also a member of the Medicine Lake Moose Lodge. She loved to knit and taught
knitting lessons for many years. For Bernice there was no such thing as too many Bingo games and she liked to
boast about her wins and mourn her losses.
Bernice is survived by a daughter, Jackie Ehrhardt and her husband Dale of Gladmar, Saskatchewan; sons Joel
and wife Tracy of Plentywood, and Jerald and wife Louise of Wolf Point; grandchildren Adam and Arin Ehrhardt,
Randy Keith and wife Katie; Lane, Dahsen, David, and Kristen Petersen; and one great-grandson, Damian
Ehrhardt. She is also survived by special friends and neighbors Charlotte and Kermit Sorensen.
Also surviving her are three sisters, Julia Laqua of Grenora, ND, Alma Muller of Williston, ND; and Agnes (Carrol)
Manger also of Grenora, sister-in-law Ruth Petersen of OR, and brother-in-law Gerald (Phyllis), also of OR.
Bernice is preceded in death by her husband Alvin of 55 years; her parents, and by four sisters and one brother:
Lena Krogen, Olga Ross, Clara Hanson, Iver Haugen, and Edna Folstad. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood
has charge of arrangements.
