Alice Holtan was born September 30, 1906 in Ellendale, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Millie
(Loken) & Albert Johnson. She was the third of five children. Alice grew up with her family 5 miles south of
Outlook, Montana on a farm, and attended the Outlook schools. When she was eighteen, she met Martin
Holtan while horseback riding. He lived one mile from Alice’s parents’ farm, so when Alice married Martin
in 1924, she moved one mile to his place. They had six children – Howard, Robert, Gordon, Beverly,
Dolores, and Harold. They farmed until Martin’s death in 1976. Alice moved to Plentywood in 1976, and
has lived at La Casa since May 2002. She was a member of Highland Lutheran Church in Outlook, and
the Plentywood Lutheran Church.
. . . . in Memory of . . . .

Early in life, Alice was busy raising her six children and performing farm life duties from milking cows to chopping wood when the men were in
the field. She was such a hard worker. She was also a great cook and baker. She wanted everything to be perfect, and it was! Later in her life,
she did a good deal of crocheting – making afghans for all of her children and grandchildren.
Alice devoted her life to her family. She was always the perfect mom and grandmother. She always put her family first. She remembered her
children’s, grandchildren’s, and great grandchildren’s birthdays, and knew them without having to refer to a calendar or list, her memory was
so fantastic. She celebrated her 100th birthday with a big party in September 2006. She was in good health and enjoyed the celebration,
receiving greetings from former President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush, and Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Millie and Albert Johnson, husband, Martin Holtan, son Howard Holtan, grandson Gary Holtan, two
sisters – Adeline Ordahl and Lillian Tronson, two brothers – Clair Johnson and Archie Johnson, daughters-in-law Lois Holtan and Carole
Holtan, and son-in-law Bill Lindsay.
She is survived by her children, Robert Holtan of Phoenix, AZ, Gordon Holtan (Shirley) of Grand Forks, ND, Beverly Fawcett (Wilfred) of Outlook,
MT, Dolores Lindsay of San Diego, CA, and Harold Holtan (Billie Jean) of St. Marie, MT.
Alice had 15 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She is survived by grandchildren Duane Holtan, Randy (Debbie) Holtan, Dr. Brian
Holtan, Debbie (Mike) Domeraske, Steve (Syd) Holtan, Becky O’Meara, Billy Holtan, Diane (Jim) Martin, Douglas (Lisa) Fawcett, Mark Lindsay,
Byron (Alison) Lindsay, Kelly (Norm) Sillerud, Greg Holtan, and Michelle (Creyton) Hughes.
Alice always treated others with respect. She didn’t want to be a bother to anyone. She didn’t have a bad word to say about anybody. She was
such a special person in every way. Her family knows they were blessed to have such a precious Mom. We will miss her so much – until we
meet again.
