Froid Community Center Contract Awarded
The community of Froid, MT, is fast approaching the reality of the brand new 7,200 square foot Froid
Community Center and Firehall. The contract to build the Center was recently awarded to Larsen Lumber of
Culbertson, MT. Owner Ron Larsen says construction will start this spring “as soon as the frost is out of the
ground.”
With the building site cleared by local volunteers, fundraising launched at a community dinner in September,
and the first round of donations in the bank, the next phase will focus on raising the $150,000 needed to
complete the $400,000 building.
The attractive multi-function facility will provide meeting/exhibit space for programs, festivals, concerts,
displays and receptions as well as a garage for the town fire trucks and ambulance. Residents and visitors
alike will find the Community Center a welcoming place to gather, celebrate and learn. Judy Waters, past
president of Froid Commercial Club said, “At this year’s town Christmas party the old Firehall was filled to
overflowing with families and friends. We’ve held countless town events in that drafty hall with its leaking
ceiling and poor lighting. It will be great to have a brand new facility with lots of space, a working kitchen, and
adequate bathrooms!”
Greg Sunwall, Building Committee treasurer, noted that while the contributed and unclaimed stock of the
Froid Farmers Union Coop comprises $150,000 of the $250,000 now in the building fund, the remainder
must come from individual donations and local grants. Sunwall said, “We hope folks from the Froid
community and the surrounding area will find it in their hearts to give generously to the new Community
Center. It is a much needed facility and ultimately, a great symbol of what can be achieved when a community
rolls up its sleeves and works together.”
Eunice Lodahl, whose late husband, Sylvan enthusiastically supported community life in northeastern
Montana, holds the distinction of being the first major contributor to the building campaign. She says that she
gave to this project because not only was it a tribute to her late husband but also an investment in the future of
Froid and the northeast corner of Montana.
As Oliver Urdahl, Building Committee member and donor commented, “This was a very good year for
farmers. My wife and I raised our family in Froid, and the community had been good to us. We want to give
back by helping create this special place for our town, its people, and future generations. As one writer said
so well, ‘If there is no willingness to invest in the future, there is no future.’” For information on the new
Community Center or to contribute to the campaign, contact Greg Sunwall at First Community Bank in
